‘Empowering networks’ and ‘acknowledging challenges’ Londoners face is key to achieving better mental health, says new Thrive LDN impact report

Thrive LDN, a citywide public mental health partnership, has reported significant progress in its 2023/24 annual report.

The report details the approach being taken in London to support Londoners’ mental health and wellbeing whilst also adapting in the face of a constantly changing world. As well as spotlighting how the collective commitments from all partners involved is helping to create a city where all Londoners having equal opportunities for good mental health and wellbeing.

The publication of the report comes as the partnership marks more than seven years since being launched by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan and London’s Health Board partners.

Adapting to new challenges

This year’s impact report from Thrive LDN begins by acknowledging the challenges faced by Londoners, both positive and negative, in recent years. The report details how Thrive LDN has adapted its strategies to address these challenges, with a focus on collaboration and empowering a network of partners to share decision-making.

The report showcases several key achievements which highlight this approach in action, including the expansion of the Real-Time Surveillance System (RTSS) to monitor self-harm data. This crucial tool is helping with early intervention and suicide prevention efforts across the capital.

Additionally, improved communication and collaboration among partners through the Economic Wellbeing Forum have allowed them to respond to the mental health impact of the cost-of-living crisis.

Furthermore, Thrive LDN has played a leading role in developing a national research infrastructure to inform future mental health policy and practice. These partnerships have attracted investment of £15 million during 2023/24, showcasing London as a global exemplar in collaborative public mental health research.

Supporting diverse communities

Thrive LDN’s commitment to building a sustainable and inclusive mental health system for all Londoners has continued. This includes supporting diverse communities, especially those facing higher risks due to identity, beliefs, or social class – or a combination of these.

One such initiative is Right to Thrive, which during 2023/24 supported 13 grassroots organisations and reached more than 6,000 participants from diverse backgrounds across London. The report also details how Thrive LDN has stepped up its program to support Hong Kong arrivals as part of the GLA’s Hong Kong Integration Programme.

Collaboration remains key

Once again, the work led by Thrive LDN underscores the importance of collaboration in achieving positive mental health outcomes. Thrive LDN has played a vital role in coordinating efforts, such as the Mayor of London’s Mental Health Recovery Mission.

The Mayor of London’s Health Advisor, Dr Tom Coffey, said: “The Mayor and I are proud that, as a result of investment from City Hall, Thrive LDN has been able to work with communities to help tackle the mental health challenges faced by Londoners.

“Sadly, far too many people across the capital experience difficulties with their mental health, but this impact report shows what can be achieved when we work in partnership. Sadiq is committed to building a fairer, healthier city for all and Thrive LDN’s forward thinking approach is vital in addressing mental health inequalities.”

Thrive LDN director, Dan Barrett, added: “It’s never been more important for us to come together, collaborate and share resources to achieve common goals. The lid has been lifted on what influences our opportunity to thrive, demonstrating how social, economic, and racial inequalities limits progress for not only good mental health and wellbeing but also for achieving social justice.

“Our impact report again highlights that there has been real progress, demonstrating that we can achieve great things when we work together. But we know that there’s much more to do and achieve together. We will continue to work across the partnership to find new ways of reaching, involving, and supporting Londoners to improve mental health and prevent a decline in wellbeing.”

The report concludes by highlighting the importance of community action and expresses optimism for the future. Thrive LDN remains committed to building on its successes and tackling new challenges to ensure positive change in London’s mental health landscape.
