About the organisation

Kanlungan (‘haven’ or ‘sanctuary’) is a registered charity consists of several community-based Filipino organisations in UK. Formed 25 years ago, its aim is to empower migrant communities and advocate for their rights and welfare. It has been working closely with different organisations and has facilitated various community-based projects aimed at improving the quality of life of migrants.

At the height of Covid-19 pandemic, Kanlungan was at the forefront of serving vulnerable migrants, especially those who do not have access to social services through its various programmes and projects supported by various funding grants. It facilitated food delivery to NHS staff, provided food voucher to those who lost their jobs, facilitated psychosocial and mental health assistance to victims of domestic abuse, the elderly who suffered from isolation and those who experienced trauma, depression and anxiety, campaigned for the rights of undocumented migrants, and conducted research on the situation of BAME staff.

About the project

Migrant Women and LGBTQ+ Healthy Mind Power aims to develop and improve the positive coping skills and resilience as well as self-confidence, personality and sense of wellbeing of migrant women and LGBTQ+ in precarious job conditions. It also aims to raise their awareness on mental health, strengthen their access to social support and community resources and heighten their sense of empowerment as protective measures against psychological distress since they are most vulnerable and least likely to seek help.

A series of bi-monthly capacity-building workshops and dialogues that will focus on developing practical life skills and providing safe space for discussing issues related to mental health and wellbeing will be conducted and facilitated by community leaders with the assistance of trained mental health specialists, such as stress management, basics of self-care, personality development, improving self-expression, engaging in positive parenting, strengthening community support and resilience.
