About the organisation
We create delicious, international food whilst providing training and a path to employment for refugees in Lewisham. Refugees face many barriers to work including gaps in their CV, a lack of UK work experience, familiarity with UK job sector and English skills. As a result, unemployment is 4x higher than the national average, leaving refugees stuck in poverty, isolated from the wider community and often vulnerable to exploitation in illegitimate jobs. As Lewisham becomes a Borough of Sanctuary, welcoming 100 vulnerable families from war torn countries by 2022, we want to ensure it is also a borough of opportunity. At Refugee Café we want to celebrate the culinary cultures present in Lewisham. We run events in which local refugee chefs showcase food from their home countries, enabling education and welcome through food.
About the project
The Eating and Meeting Festival is a food festival with a difference! The strong link between food and well-being is influenced by many factors. Our identity affects the food we eat but so can poverty and displacement. This event will address some specific food challenges experienced by local refugees, whilst celebrating our diverse borough through delicious food. On the day the Lewisham community will be welcomed to take part in a huge feast, cookery demonstrations, run by local refugee chefs, family friendly arts activities – exploring our personal relationships with food.
